GoT S02 Episode 2 – Strategies and Preparations

Game of Thrones Season 2 episode 2 brings yet another set of intrigues and turnarounds that the show had so diligently used thus far to keep us glued to our seats in anticipation of each side’s next move.

“The Night Lands” seems to be an episode of planning and setting up allegiances rather than one of action, however, the interesting events portrayed in the 50 or so minutes of the episode will perhaps set a stage for the following developments we will see in the rest of Season 2.

Allegiances and Honor in Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 2

There is an increasing amount of talk about the separation between logic and mysticism in this second series of the Game of Thrones. Even from the beginning of the episode, the conversation between Tyrion and Cersei shows how the two siblings share radically different views on this matter, and later in the episode, Ser Davos Seaworth is also urged by his son, a firm believer in Stannis’ newfound god, to consider taking up worship.

With so many threats to the young and ill tempered Joffrey Baratheon’s illegitimate rule, however, it seems there are far more pressing matters at hand. Stannis is convinced of his own right to the throne, and he enlists the assistance of the pirate Salladhor Saan to help him get it at all costs.

Even though Joffrey himself does not appear in Game of Thrones Season 2 episode 2, there is still a lot of talk revolving around the young king, as Tyrion discovers that he was the one to order the massacre of children from the previous episode, and is left to “tidy up the mess” in the hope of avoiding a future uprising of the people.

Arya Stark and Her Journey

To the delight of her fans, we also see a lot more of Arya in this episode. Still in disguise as a young boy, her bond with Gendry seems to become stronger as they both learn they are being hunted.

Despite being skilled in keeping secrets, she is discovered by Gendry as being a girl, and reveals some of her past, as well, letting him know that she’s a Stark. Her journey is far from being over, however, but her survival and gradual progress toward Winterfell definitely represent one of the greatest threats to Joffrey’s throne.

Despite a slightly lighter atmosphere than the one we have witnessed in episode 1, Game Of Thrones Season 2 episode 2, with some comical and potentially shocking scenes, still mirrors the eventful and fascinating pattern of the Westeros power games.
